Horn Charts Series: "Before I Let Go"

Whenever I have played “Before I Let Go” by Maze, I’m ALWAYS curious to see what the heck is going to happen. The song is essentially just a bass line and two chords with an intro and a middle section (which may be a pre-chorus or a bridge, depending on how you look at things). Where all these parts will fall within the performance is my biggest question. So, I essentially lock eyes on the strongest player and/or bandleader for any sort of cue. This is a very common thing to do, and I would advise any player to always do the same.

However, there MUST be a better way. Right? What if there was a roadmap sketched out in advance so that every person in the group knew (beforehand!) just what was going to happen? This may require a rehearsal…

Did this information help you out? Well, then maybe you'd consider leaving me a tip (Venmo @ryangabbart). Any donations are welcome and I will not collect your personal information for any marketing records. Thanks in advance!

In my ongoing effort to distribute correct information and spread goodwill, I'm posting PDF files of my transcribed horn charts for pop/variety band (3-piece: trumpet, tenor sax, trombone). I consider these selections as standard repertoire for the modern commercial musician, so think of these as educational tools to help you get through the gig. Like a Real Book for the pop musician—except with editing.
