Horn Charts Series: "I Wish"

First things first: How is the band going to END this tune? I suggest talking this oft forgotten part or music-making with your bandmates before diving into this one. The ending can go on and on forever, if you let it… In the chart I’ve included a suggested ending that is cued in order to end things on a “button”, if you will. I’m very fond of the “button ending”, but you can also segue into Stevie’s “Superstition” fairly easily since they are about the same tempo and groove. But, these are just my suggestions…

When playing this one, try to play it cool. It’s easy to get all hyped up and wanting to play everything HARD but I really think it sounds better when you’re pretending you’re playing the shout chorus of a Count Basie chart. Watch this video on the recording of “I Wish” and note the strong big band influence on this song, not to mention the ease of the horn players.

In my ongoing effort to distribute correct information and spread goodwill, I'm posting PDF files of my transcribed horn charts for pop/variety band (3-piece: trumpet, tenor sax, trombone). I consider these selections as standard repertoire for the modern commercial musician, so think of these as educational tools to help you get through the gig. Like a Real Book for the pop musician—except with editing.
