Horn Charts Series: "Brick House"
Repeat after me: “I will not overplay on this tune, I WILL NOT overplay on this tune…”
DID YOU KNOW? The Commodores’ “Brick House” is actually a very laid-back groove. For decades, I’ve had to endure crappy bands that insist on overplaying and overblowing this tune at extreme volumes and tempos.
Why does everything have to be so hard???
Instead, I’d like to suggest that the horn section (at least) keep this at a moderate to low volume and play it mellow. I’ve notated articulations and dynamics here as a reminder that the horn lines should be TIGHT and not forceful. This isn’t an aggressive recording, so don’t play aggressively. (I also omitted the horn background on the verses. You shouldn’t play these parts because no one cares!)
“I will not overplay on this tune, I will not overplay on this tune…”

In my ongoing effort to distribute correct information and spread goodwill, I'm posting PDF files of my transcribed horn charts for pop/variety band (3-piece: trumpet, tenor sax, trombone). I consider these selections as standard repertoire for the modern commercial musician, so think of these as educational tools to help you get through the gig. Like a Real Book for the pop musician—except with editing.
