Horn Charts Series: "Lovely Day"

Bill Withers’ ode to a great day has become something of a classic tune now that we’re in the post-ironic age of appreciating Yacht Rock and the like. Personally, it took me about a year of playing this tune to truly appreciate it. Now, I love its simplicity and pared-down orchestration.

My rule-of-thumb is, as always, DO NOT OVER-PLAY! There’s absolutely nothing about Bill Withers’ music that screams for “chops” or technical wizardry. You should always sound like you’re singing along with the vocals, reflecting Withers’ writing process. His first songs were composed in his head by singing to himself while working as an assembler for military aircraft. Your playing should reflect this, too.

In my ongoing effort to distribute correct information and spread goodwill, I'm posting PDF files of my transcribed horn charts for pop/variety band (3-piece: trumpet, tenor sax, trombone). I consider these selections as standard repertoire for the modern commercial musician, so think of these as educational tools to help you get through the gig. Like a Real Book for the pop musician—except with editing.
