I often get asked, “What is music copying?” I can guarantee that this doesn’t mean I make copies at the nearest Staples. Instead, a good copyist will clean up rough drafts of notated musical scores, parts, etc. and present them in a way that is easily read and distributed via PDF document. The changes can be as revelatory as this:
- Before copying
- After copying

I copy music ranging from large ensembles to lead sheets. All of the following is addressed:
- Standardized page and measure layout
- Correct key signatures, accidentals & chords
- Correct rhythms, articulations & phrasings
- Include measure numbers & rehearsal marks
- No discrepancy between parts & score
Of course, other problems can sometimes present themselves after a thorough copying. Chord voicings may be wrong (or rough), rhythms may be convoluted, and so on. As an experienced arranger and musician, I know what to troubleshoot in order to maximize the quick communication of your music. Clarity and simplicity are critical for distributing parts in an orderly fashion and a good layout can take some great effort. Everything from correct notation, transposition, clear articulations and rhythmic cleanliness help musicians to sight-read your music easier. And that means less agony spent in rehearsal time.
